Getting Started with the Paleo Diet

7/29/2016

The Paleo Diet is based upon everyday, modern foods that mimic the food groups of our hunter-gatherer ancestors.

Below we outline 7 fundamental characteristics of the Paleo Diet that will help to optimize your health and lose weight:
  • Higher protein intake – Meat, seafood, and other animal products represent the staple foods of modern day Paleo diets.
  • Lower carbohydrate intake and lower glycemic index – Non-starchy fresh fruits and vegetables represent the main carbohydrate source and will provide for 35-45 % of your daily calories.
  • Higher fiber intake – Dietary fiber is essential for good health, and despite what we’re told, whole grains aren’t the place to find it. Non-starchy vegetables contain eight times more fiber than whole grains and 31 times more than refined grains. Even fruits contain twice as much fiber as whole grains and seven times more than refined grains.
  • Moderate to higher fat intake dominated by monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats with balanced Omega-3 and Omega-6 fats – It is not the total amount of fat in your diet that raises your blood cholesterol levels and increases your risk for heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes, but rather the type of fat.
  • Higher potassium and lower sodium intake – Unprocessed, fresh foods naturally contain 5 to 10 times more potassium than sodium. Potassium is necessary for the heart, kidneys, and other organs to work properly.
  • Net dietary alkaline load that balances dietary acid – After digestion, all foods present either a net acid or alkaline load to the kidneys. Acid producers are meats, fish, grains, legumes, cheese, and salt.
  • Higher intake of, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and plant phytochemicals – Whole grains are not a good substitute for grass produced or free ranging meats, fruits, and veggies, as they contain no vitamin C, vitamin A, or vitamin B12.
So, what should you eat & not eat on the Paleo Diet? Here a few suggestions:
Eat:
  • Grass-produced meats
  • Fish/seafood
  • Fresh fruits and veggies
  • Eggs
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Healthful oils (Olive, walnut, flaxseed, macadamia, avocado, coconut)
Don’t Eat:
  • Cereal grains
  • Legumes (including peanuts)
  • Dairy
  • Refined sugar
  • Potatoes
  • Processed foods
  • Salt
  • Refined vegetable oils
Next Age Fitness has seen success and fully supports Paleo type diets. There are many diets that have enough similarities to Paleo, so it’s more about your ability to keep true to the food plan long term and, of course the results, of the plan paired with regular exercise.

WHY IS HYDRATION IMPORTANT?

7/22/2016

As you may know, there are several components that go into health and fitness that people often forget about or make less of a priority. Factors such as genetics, heredity, diet, and lifestyle are often overlooked in favor of extreme workouts that produce an abundant amount of sweat. One factor that is absolutely vital (literally and metaphorically speaking) is that of maintaining proper hydration, and it is one we, here at Next Age Fitness, would like to touch on today.
How Can Hydrating Help Me Work Out
Not only will you feel better overall with an adequate amount of water in your system, but you will also be able to work out closer to your maximum potential. Water will help your body regulate its temperature, and will help to lubricate your joints, making your workout easier, and helping you work out harder. It also provides transport for vital nutrients that give you energy.
How Can I Tell If I’m Properly Hydrated
There are several ways to notice your body is not getting the proper amount of hydration. Some signs of dehydration are:
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dry mouth
  • Lack of sweating
  • Hard, fast heartbeat
The American Council on Exercise has also suggested you drink water before, during, and after your workout to maintain a healthy hydration level. It recommends more specifically these guidelines:
  • Drink 17 to 20 ounces of water 2 to 3 hours before you start exercising
  • Drink 8 ounces of water 20 to 30 minutes before you start exercising or during your warm-up
  • Drink 7 to 10 ounces of water every 10 to 20 minutes during exercise
  • Drink 8 ounces of water no more than 30 minutes after you exercise
What If I Forgot My Water At Home
At Next Age Fitness, we know you will experience an intense workout, albeit in a short amount of time, which is why we provide bottled water to our customers. We understand that to get the most effective workout possible, you will need to exert yourself, but also understand that not everyone works at the same pace. We will check in with you often to ensure your well-being and also make sure you are not becoming dehydrated.

ARX TECHNOLOGY EXPLAINED

7/15/2016

At Next Age Fitness, located in Atlanta, GA, we get a lot of questions regarding our ARX equipment. “What is it? How does it work?” — This article should help.
HISTORY
ARX (adaptive resistance exercise) arose from the collaborative efforts of inventor Randy Rindfleisch and fellow co-founder Mark Alexander. Randy and Mark joined forces in 2011 to begin the pursuit of building machines that would disrupt the exercise industry and change the way the world exercised.
“ARX” is the first technology created that perfectly accommodate’s any user’s force output and measure it repeatably and accurately throughout the entire range of motion. Throw in some tracking software to motivate the user while quantifying and monitoring all of the important metrics and you have ARX; the next generation in exercise equipment!

PERFECT RESISTANCE ARX equipment matches your force output instantly and automatically using a computer-driven, motorized drive belt system. ARX actively tailors the resistance to you on the fly, allowing you to work as hard as you choose without the fear of injury. No dangerous weights to drop and no adjustments to make; just perfect resistance.
TRACK YOUR PROGRESS ARX uses computer software to provide you with instant feedback that precisely quantifies progress, determines recovery, and tracks trends over time. Motivate yourself by pulling up workouts from your workout history and trying to beat your scores from last week, last month, or last year!
SAFETY REDEFINEDTraditional weights and machines provide a single level of resistance from the beginning to the end of any exercise set. ARX machines adapt their resistance to your strength instantly, never applying more force than you can handle at any given time. You are safe to lower your effort, mid-exercise, or even stop without the fear of falling weights or getting hurt.
